The Chicago Police Department could not believe their eyes when they saw the terrible condition of two dogs in an abandoned warehouse. The dogs were stick-thin, starving, and in desperate need of immediate medical attention. They contacted the Trio Animal Foundation (TAF) right away to report the situation and to help the sick dogs.
The healing journey
Everyone had to be on board to help the dogs, who are now named Oscar and Emmy, heal from the condition. They showed starvation-related symptoms and were insanely underweight the first time they were brought to TAF. Oscar and Emmy had to be hooked up to IVs until the medical team saw improvements in their vital signs.
When the medical team saw that the dogs’ bodies were responding positively to medicine, they started to move on to a special kind of diet. Oscar only weight 45 lbs. when they arrived while Emmy weighed 22.4 lbs. It was imperative that those numbers doubled to get the dogs back to their healthy state.
More than the healing of the physical body, the dogs needed a lot of inner work as well. While the TAF team give them special diets to address the starvation concerns, they also had to be given care, attention, and love. It was important to let Oscar and Emmy feel that they are loved and accepted to help them forget about their dark past.
When the dogs’ bodies improved, it was time to look for their forever home. Emmy was immediately adopted by one of the vet technicians who fell in love with her while she was being worked on. Oscar, on the other hand, showed some behavioral problems and had to be sent to boarding to resolve the issue. It took him longer to find his forever home.
