As humans, we cannot really control over some things but what we can do is to control how we react to avoid hurting other’s feelings.
Everyday we are faced with so many challenges and minute problems that we often overlook. Sometimes when we are tired and exhausted we tend to be grumpy. When we are stressed and depressed we tend to sulk in and just wanted to neglect anyone and be alone. But there are times as well that we are not sensitive to others that we don’t realize we are already hurting them.
Just like humans, our pets have feelings too. And because of that, though they cannot really tell you why through words but definitely it will show on how they react to what you are doing.
Below are some tips to know if you are hurting your pet’s feelings and what to do about it.
1. Dwelling on their mistakes
Like people, pets get hurt too when you are rubbing it in to them the wrongdoings that they unintentionally did. Because we are too busy we tend to forget that they need a break as well from time to time. For example, potty trained dogs know where to do it but other times they cannot hold in it for so long. Shouting at them for the mistakes they often not do will make your dog afraid of you and surely will hurt their feelings.
2. Not giving some time to play
As the saying goes to humans, ” All work and no play, makes Juan a dull one”. This simply applies to pets as well. Giving them ample attention will make them feel secure that they are cared and loved. They are not requiring you to be with them all the time. But a simple 10-minute walk outside, a cuddle in the couch, a quick play with them or nibbling with them are good enough. By doing the opposite, you are already hurting them.
3. Demanding them when they are fearful
There are lots of things you need to observe with your dog to avoid punishing them with such behavior. Crouching, raised tackles, flattened ears, tucked tails or snarling are just common simple signs that your dog is uncomfortable. Yelling at them in this kind of situation will be of no help. All they need from you is to keep calm and quiet. Talk to them in a non assertive way. And keep them away from the situation that they are afraid of.
4. Erratic changes to house rules
We, as humans will definitely are not ready to some changes that are happening around us. Especially if the rules are drastically changed. Our pets are not happy with it either. Maybe there are days that you let your dog sleep beside you and on other days they are not allowed to get inside your room. Simple change of rules in the house will give them confusion on their end.
5. Letting them be isolated
There are times that our pets may misbehaved to something that we don’t like. And one of the things that we do to punish them from misbehaving is to leave them alone. Dogs love to have a company and by letting them be secluded from you and the family will bring sadness to them.
