Earthquakes are natural phenomenons that sometimes leave destruction and casualties after they happened. According to United States Geological Survey (USGS), a group that tracks earthquakes, “an earthquake is what happens when two blocks of the earth suddenly slip past one another.”. And earthquakes are recorded by a seismogram.
Seismogram recordings known as seismographs determine the size of an earthquake which is called magnitude. There is only one magnitude for an earthquake but with different intensities.
Last Monday, April 22, at exactly 5:11 P.M. in Philippine time, a 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck Luzon, Philippines. The epicenter of the earthquake is recorded 18 km North East of Castillejos, Zambales.
The earthquake was felt in the whole Central Luzon and as far as the capital of the country which is Manila. According to the National Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), an Earthquake Intensity Scale of VI (Very Strong) was felt in some areas in Pampanga.
Pampanga is a neighboring province of Zambales, where the epicenter was recorded. It is under the state of calamity now due to the destruction left by the strong earthquake.
In one place in Pampanga, called Porac, a 4-story building collapsed during the earthquake. It is the Chuzon Supermarket which was operating and with grocery shoppers at the time the earthquake happened. The death toll recorded is five with nine injured people.
During the search and rescue operation for the possible survivors in the crashed building, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) deployed nine police dogs to help the rescuers.
They were deployed last Tuesday. “They were able to find 1 survivor, 1 casualty,”, said Sheryl Palcis, who is the head of the MMDA K9’s information and planning office.
The K9 paw warriors names are Billy, Thunder, Farah, Ringo, Cody, Chia, Dumbo, Chaplin, and Lucy. Paws&Click which is a pet photography studio posted a photo of the three heroic K9 dogs.
The said post became viral with 22,000 shares now and 2,400 comments which are full of love, salute, and ‘thank-yous’ to the dogs from the netizens. In the viral photo, Billy, a Belgian Malinois, Thunder, a Jack Russel Terrier, and Farah, a German Shepherd, are wearing official harnesses with proud faces while posing in front of the camera.
Indeed, not all heroes wear capes, others are on leashes and just want some pats. A big salute and thanks to these adorable K9 dogs for all their hard work and efforts!
