Wesley White, a photographer by profession, was in Thatch Caye, Belize on a working trip, but he was lucky enough to have a bit of free time to enjoy the island’s breathtaking beauty.
Wanting to make the most of his day off, he rented a kayak and headed over to a small island between Thatch Caye and Ragamuffin Caye. There, he planned to have a quiet picnic, surrounded by the sound of the waves with the sun shining warmly on his skin. What bliss!
The islet was not deserted as Wesley initially thought, however. As soon as he drew near, he spotted a thin puppy in front of a fishing shack.
Wesley’s heart broke when he saw just how skeletal the dog was. The canine was very close to dying. The man knew he could not leave him there, so he decided to spend the rest of his time in Belize rescuing the stray, whom he named Winston.

On his way back to the resort with Winston, Wesley couldn’t help but wonder if anybody would help him with the dog. He only had 36 hours left in Belize, and so he needed to get Winston to a shelter as soon as possible.
As it turned out, Wesley needn’t have worried. The people at the hotel did not think twice about lending a hand—one gave Winston cans of dog food, while the bartender called his contacts to find out where the nearest veterinary office was.
Dr. Mia, a veterinarian from the mainland, found that Winston had a mite infestation in addition to being malnourished, but that was all; the canine was in pretty good shape, and he was not suffering from other illnesses.
After staying at the vet’s office for a few days, Winston went to a foster home courtesy of a volunteer from the Belize Humane Society named Melanie.
The foster mom helped the dog recover and sent Wesley regular updates about his health. After a couple of months, Dr. Mia finally gave Winston the green light to fly to the US so he could go home to Montana with Wesley.
The photographer and his wife have two other dogs named Bella and Anna, and they were not sure at first if the two would get along with Winston. The canines quickly accepted the new dog into their family, however, and now the three of them are inseparable.
Now that he’s healthy, Winston is almost unrecognizable from the neglected stray he had once been. One thing hasn’t changed, though—he’s still the friendly and trusting pooch he has always been.
And he might have been born a beach dog, but Winston absolutely loves the snow! Watch him enjoying the cold Montana weather here:
