A wedding is one important celebration in anyone’s lives. And usually, we want our closest friends and families to be included in the wedding entourage.
We want important people in our lives to witness the matrimony and celebrate with us. And normally, the people who were appointed as the best man and the bride’s maid in a wedding means they are really close to the couple.
But what if, you attend a wedding and see that the best man is not a human, but rather a dog?
Justin Lansford was is a military veteran. He was deployed as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division at Afghanistan last 2012.
Unfortunately, he lost his left leg to an accident. According to Justin, they struck an improvised explosive device (IED) while on the field and it flipped his truck. The accident resulted in severed femurs for Justin which resulted in the amputation of his leg.
Justin returned to the United States and he knew that he needed a dog for coping up with the post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) brought by the incident.
He reached out to Warrior Canine Connections, which is an organization that helps warriors for trauma recovery. The two-year-old golden retriever Gabe was given to Justin. And they immediately felt a connection with each other!
“If I fall, he’ll come up running next to me and I can use him to push off of to get up off the ground. He helps me with one thing to the next. I can use him as a stable surface to lean on, as I get to and from the ground.”, Justin said.
Gabe became a big help for Justin. And because of that, it isn’t questionable that Gabe helped Justin when he proposed in 2014 to Carol Balmes, his longtime girlfriend.
He proposed on Veteran’s Day and Carol said yes.
And in 2015, Justin and Carol decided to tie the knot in Largo, Florida. And guess who the adorable best man is? Yes! It is the best boy Gabe!
Gabe was also the ring bearer and it walked both its fur mom and fur dad down the aisle. This dog has done a lot for its fur dad that it truly deserves to be the best man on this special occasion.
Justin and Carol are still married and are happily together up to this point. A lot of memories and things were done and shared with the couple and Gabe.
Gabe is still a service dog for Justin. And Justin started fostering puppies form the Warrior Canine Connections before they go to their forever homes. Gabe helps him in training and helping to socialize the junior dogs.
