They say everything happens for a reason. Sometimes, one small decision we do can have a big impact on someone else’s life. Just like the meeting of Bill and River, the stray dog.

Bill found the stray dog inside his car one day when he stopped and opened his car’s door to take out some trash. Apparently, the dog saw the open car’s door as an opportunity to seek shelter inside the car.
The dog was not in good shape and must be hungry when Bill found her in his passenger’s seat. Having only Rice Krispie Treat in his car, Bill gave this food to the dog. Bill found the dog very sweet which made him hard to leave the dog behind so he took her home.
Bill’s family isn’t new to welcoming stray animals as they already have a cat and three dogs. On his way home, Bill sent a photo of the dog to his wife, Angela Shaver. Shaver asked Bill what would be the dog’s name and they decide to call the dog River because that is where Bill found her.

Shaver and her son waited for Bill and River outside the door. River was hesitant at first to get out of the car, but once she realized that she is in a safe place, she greeted her new family with a wagging tail.
River was introduced to the other animals one step at a time to avoid stress and confusion and for the animals to be not overwhelmed.

River’s new family gave her a bath as she is covered in mud, blood, and ticks. They also gave her a good meal and Bill made a bed for her. River slept all night in that bed near the space heater.
It was found out that River has tapeworms, heartworms, and wounds on her face and neck after she was taken to the vet for a check-up. However, her condition started getting better after she was prescribed with the right medication.

River is indeed receiving a bunch of love and attention from her new family right now. She is getting to know her surroundings and mingles with the people and animals around her slowly.

As for Bill, he is so glad that he took a stop on that day while driving home to Missouri after the fishing trip in Arkansas. Things would’ve been different if he decided not to do that and River would’ve stayed as a stray dog up to this day.
