Having a pet is sometimes like having a child. You cherish them, love them, and form a bond with them.
You become close to them and spend memories with them. Most of the time, you also talk to them like a person even if you know they can not talk back.
Talking to your pet may seem weird for other people. But do not worry pet owners, Science got your back for this ‘weird’ behavior!
This support from Science mostly came from a study with the title “On Seeing Human: A Three-Factor Theory of Anthropomorphism”. This paper was from the University of Chicago.
The paper tackles that there is a lot more about talking to your pets. Anthropomorphism is defined as the attribution of human characteristics or behavior to a god, animal, or object.
The paper proposes that “humans tend to use knowledge of their own inner states and experience and use that to project onto other sentient creatures and animals.”
So yes, talking to your pets is just a sign that you are socially intelligent and well-adjusted!
Talking to your furbabies also indicates something about your own natural curiosity. When someone you meet doesn’t want to engage in talking to animals or their pets, or in treating an object as a living thing, they must not be very curious about its inner life.
On the other hand, talking to your pets can also mean that you are lonely. When someone has the increased need to talk to inanimate objects and treat them as living ones is a sign that they are lacking some social and interpersonal connections.
However, it is much better to spend time with your pets than spending time with dogs than with plates and trying to talk to them. One always find something or someone to interact with when isolated.
Regardless of the back-up of Science about talking to pets, it is just pretty normal to do this to anyone that you feel a connection with. Anything that brings you closer to your canine buddy, as long as it is not harmful to both of you, is good.
